Quotes From 11 Minutes

January 14, 2010

I was browsing through my ebooks earlier today when I chanced upon Paulo Coelho’s book, 11 Minutes. I remember it took me a very long time to finish the book. It was unsual because I normally finish books in less than a day. It was more unual because I’ve always loved Coelho’s books and I never put them down once I start reading.

But this book was very different. For the first few pages, I was really bored. I felt like I’ve read better books before, and I was surprised that I wasn’t enjoying my favorite author at all. However, I kept the faith and read on. Coelho didn’t become my favorite author for no reason, so I kept telling myself that I will get to the part, eventually.

And I did. I did not even know I was already enjoying the book. All I knew was that I could not stop reading anymore, and I started taking notes of the lines that touched me the most. I realized then that this was one of the books I’d read over and over again.

For today, I would like to share the most unforgettable lines from 11 Minutes. These lines have a universal truth in them. At one point or another, we all experience the same things that were described in the novel. If, by any weird chance, you have read the book yet, then you should scour the internet fot an ebook, or head to your favorite bookstore and grab your own copy. You’re going to need it because this book is one that you will keep on reaching for whenever you feel the need to read about love, sex, and relationships.

1. Really important meetings are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other.

2. Anyone who is in love is making love the whole time, even the they’re not.

3. The strongest love is the love that can demonstrate its fragility.

4. At every moment of our lives we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss.

5. Sometimes you get no second chance and that it’s best to accept the gifts the world offers you.

6. If I must be faithful to someone or something, then I have, first of all, to be faithful to myself.

7. It is not time that changes man, nor knowledge; the only thing that can change someone’s mind is love.

8. Humans can withstand a week without water, two weeks without food, many years of homelessness, but not loneliness. It is the worst of all tortures, the worst of all sufferings.

9. All my life, I thought of love as some kind of voluntary enslavement… Freedom only exists when love is present. The person who gives him or herself wholly, the person who feels freest, is the person who loves the most.

10. In love, no one can harm anyone else; we are each of us responsible for our own feelings and cannot blame someone else for what we feel.

11. No one loses anyone, because no one owns anyone. That is the true experience of freedom: having the most important thing in the world without owning it.

12. The great aim of every human being is to understand the meaning of total love. Love is not to be found in someone else, but in ourselves; we simply awaken it. But in order to do that, we need the other person. The universe only makes sense when we have someone to share our feelings with.

13. Profound desire, true desire is the desire to be close to someone.

14. What is real always finds a way of revealing itself.

15. The most important experiences a man can have are those that take him to the very limit; that is the only way we learn, because it requires all our courage.

16. When a teacher helps someone to discover something, the teacher always learns something new too.

17. Pain and suffering are used to justify the one thing that brings only joy: love.

18. I can choose either to be a victim of the world or an adventurer in search of treasure.  It’s all a question of how I view my life.

19. In all the languages in the world, there is the same proverb: ‘What the eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over.’  Well, I say that there isn’t an ounce of truth in it.  The further off they are, the closer to the heart are all those feelings that we try to repress and forget.  If we’re in exile, we want to store away every tiny memory of our roots.  If we’re far from the person we love, everyone we pass in the street reminds us of them.

Because Sometimes You Need To Be Sarcastic…

December 29, 2009

If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame.

Learn from your parents’ mistakes, use birth control!

The universe is laughing behind your back.

Honesty is the best policy but insanity is the best defense.

I’m not crazy, my reality is just different than yours.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Love your enemies.. it pisses them off.

I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Don’t take life too seriously, you won’t get out alive.

You’re just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.

The trouble with life is there’s no background music.

Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until they speak.

Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun.

People are seldom too busy to stop and tell you how busy they are.

The number one problem in our country is apathy, but who cares!

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.

Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students!

Why do people who know the least know it the loudest?

I was wondering why frisbees got bigger as they got closer then it hit me.

Blind World

December 23, 2009

An eye for an eye, and the whole world would be blind.

-Khalil Gibran

How many times have we tried to avenge the wrongs that were done to us? We always follow that famous line, “An eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth.” But is it really right? If we do so, are we really easing the pain?

Kahlil Gibran is one of my personal heroes. I admire him. I admire the way he thinks, and I completely agree with this quote. I think that he has it spot on. If we seek revenge everytime we get hurt, then the whole world would be hurting right now.

We should really think hard before we do anything. In life, there will always be people who hurt us. There will always be those assholes who treat us like worthless junk. There will always be men who act like jerks and break our hearts. There will always be friends who are more envious than supportive.

In spite of all that, our purpose on this earth does not change. We are here to make the world a better place. That should be the only thing that matters. People will always be people, whether they are here to hurt or heal. But OUR own lives should be spent in healing or helping others.

Think about it. If we have to get even for everytime that we are aggreviated, then twe would all be hurting at least one person that we know. This whole world would be blind, and there’s no such fun living in a world where people could not see anything. We have such a beautiful world. There are so many other things to focus on other than the hurt. Life is too short. Why don’t we live it?

Love (Everybody Should Read This)

December 22, 2009

I have this friend who broke up with her boyfriend a couple of weeks ago. It’s not anything new anymore, since their on-off cycle has been the only permanent thing in their relationship. It takes two to tango. When two people break up, it’s never just one person’s fault. It always takes two to reach the point when you cannot take things any further. My friend is obviously hurting right now. But the guy is hurting too. People are always hurt when relationships end. I think what’s wrong with us is that we focus on our own hurts. We do not stop and think if other people are hurting too. We break up with the person we’re with because that person has hurt us. We don’t pause to consider if our reactions could actually give us more pain.

Love is a complicated word. I know that. Everybody knows that. We can define love in any way we want to, but the bottom line is that we can never completely describe it. I may not know exactly what love is, but I sure as hell know when love is not really love at all.

Love is not proud. Too often, we refuse to accept that we have faults too. We keep convincing ourselves and others that we are the ones aggreviated. We are the victims. We were hurt. We were let down. Does it really have to be that way? During those minutes that we keep talking to our friends about our heartaches, did we at least ask the other person if we hurt them too?

Love is not rude. Yes, they may not love us anymore. Those people who promised us forever, to love us without end, and to always be there for us? Well, they have walked away. They left us without even looking back. We are left alone to drown in misery. But do we really have the right to hurt them back? They may not have the right to hurt us, but we don’t have the right to hurt them too. We do not have the right to hurt each other.

Love is not self-seeking. The first question that we should all ask ourselves is: Why are we in a relationship with someone? Is it because we don’t want to be lonely? Is it because our exes have someone new now, and it’s just too embarrassing to come across them at random places and still be alone? Is it because we need someone to fill that void? Is it because we need someone to get us through? Are we really in love, or are we just looking for a person to make everything easier for us?

Love does not keep a record of wrongs. I am not saying that we should start being martyrs. I am not saying that we have to close our eyes to everything that is wrong. However, people are not perfect. Nobody is perfect. We all have our “fall from grace” moment. We all do something wrong at one point. It is not love when we keep going back to the wrong ones. If we can recall the wrong deeds more than the laughter, then there’s really something wrong with the relationship.

I am not a perfect lover. I have a lot of shortcomings. I am not patient. I only think of myself. I get angry easily. But one thing that I know how to do is forgive. I easily forgive, and that makes me a lot better than other people out there. I hope that one day, I will be mature enough to love people the way that they deserve to be loved.

As a close to this blog, I would like to include the passage from Corinthians 13. I’m sure that everybody is familiar with this. I think that no matter how many times we try to define love in our own way, we will always keep on coming back to this. The passage defines love in as much justice as it deserves. As cheesy as this may sound, the passage is actually correct.

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

It Might Have Been (reposted from my other blog)

December 20, 2009

For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these: “It might have been.”

–John Greenleaf Whittier

Not all love stories last. Some have bad endings. People often say that the hottest love has the coldest end. Sometimes, even the ones who are in love the most are the ones who part ways.

I do not want my love story to end. I want it to go on and on, for as long as the world exists. As impossible as that sounds, I want this to happen. I think that the saddest thing that could happen to someone is not death. It’s the loss of love.

When lovers part ways, the most common question is always, “what if?” What if I did not give up? What if I had been more patient? What if I gave more? What if I had been faithful? What if we were still together? What if we never had to say goodbye?

What might have happened? What might have been? We ask these questions not because we regret what happened. We ask them because we got hurt. When loved more than we thought possible, and we just got hurt in the end.

When we stop asking questions, that’s when we’d know that we are already over someone. We are already over somebody when we stop questioning what happened. The moment the questions stop coming, then the feelings are no longer there. But because getting over someone is never easy, we always have questions.

The bottomline? The only answer to our “what if” questions is just this: It might have been happier….

Forwarded

December 18, 2009

This is the best forwarded message I received through text.

As you grow up, you’ll learn that even the first person who wasn’t supposed to let you down probably will.

You will have your heart broken probably more than once, and it will be harder everytime.

You’ll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

You’ll fight with your best friend.

You’ll blame a new love for the things the old one did.

You’ll cry because time is passing too fast, and you’ll eventually lose someone you love.

So take many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you’ve never been hurt because every 60 seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you’ll never get back.

Easy Love (reposted from my other blog)

December 15, 2009

“While faith makes all things possible, it is love that makes all things easy.”

-Evan H. Hopkins

I beg to disagree. I have loved. I have felt a lot of things for a lot of people, and they were never easy feelings. I loved a lot of people, and it was never easy. For me, love is never easy. Love may make things worthwhile. But easy? That’s one thing that love isn’t.
